  by Tony Akowe, Abuja No group has applied for registration as a political party, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said. The electoral umpire insists that associations seeking to be registered as political parties must follow laid-down guidelines and abide by the legal and administrative requirements for registration. Admitting that over 100 associations are in the queue, the commission said none of them has submitted a formal application to it yet. National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, told The Nation that what INEC has received so far are letters of intent and not formal applications. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred national honours on several Nigerians, including Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, slain environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, human rights lawyer Femi Falana, and Catholic Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah. The honours, announced during Tinubu’s address to a joint session of the National Assembly in Abuja on Thursday, were awarded in recognition of the recipients’ unwavering commitment to democracy, justice, press freedom, and national development.
